Topples Trees and Travels MARCH 29, 2000 --- An approximately 60 year old man lost control of his vehicle at the T-intersection of Old Lake Shore and Dennis Roads in the Town of Evans early Wednesday morning. Coming off Old Lake Shore Road, the driver apparently passed out at the wheel, leaning on the car's accelerator and failed to stop at the intersection. His car first struck a cement abutment at the entrance to the Woodside Farm Road. Traveling into the adjacent woods, the car toppled several trees and came to rest on the drive after striking a larger tree with the rear of the vehicle. The car traveled over 100 ft. before it stopped. Town of Evans Patrolman Doug Czora luckily noticed the vehicle deep in the woods as he patrolled the area. At the time of the accident, it was undetermined as to how long the vehicle had been in the woods. Evans Center's Rescue 1 responded first and started with stabilization of the vehicle. Their EMS team worked to stabilize the patient's condition while the extrication team went to work on the exterior of the car. After cutting away the windshield, the crew used gas and electric powered Sawz-alls along with their Hurst Hydraulic Cutters to cut through the posts of the compact car. Once the roof was removed, the driver's side door was peeled away using the Jaws-of-Life, allowing removal of the patient. Due to the mechanism of injury and the severity of the crash, Chief Dennis Allen requested Mercy Flight Medical Helicopter to land at the Wendt Beach Park and dispatched and engine from the Highland Hose Fire Company to standby for the chopper landing. A Rural/Metro Ambulance responded to the scene and assisted in patient care. The teams combined their efforts for a textbook exercise in patient extrication and stabilization. |
