Thruway
Tractor Trailer Fire Evans Center Firefighters were called around noon today to assist the Scranton Fire Company in extinguishing a stubborn fire of paper products stacked tight inside a tractor trailer on the westbound section of the New York State Thruway. The burning contents were to the front of the trailer closest to the cab which caused access problems for the firefighters. Crews from several neighboring departments were called to assist, including the Lake View Fire Department which dropped a large diameter supply line off a hydrant on Lake View Road and down the embankment on to the Thruway. Big Tree, Lake Shore and Newton-Abbott were at the scene.
The Thruway was shut down for hours between Hamburg Exit 57 and the Eden-Angola Exit 57A while traffic was diverted to adjoining highways. Scranton was assisted at the scene by Fire Coordinator Jim McCullough from the Erie County Department of Emergency Services' Division of Fire Safety.
Firefighting is not for everyone – but volunteering can be. Evans Center offers limited duty memberships in the areas of Fire/Rescue only, Fire Police only, Emergency Medical Services Only, Water Rescue only, or Associate only. Associate members support the fire department through administrative, technology, fund-raising, clerical and other non-emergency business functions. If you or anyone you know are interested in volunteering, please do not hesitate to contact the Evans Center Fire Company at 716/549-1221 or fill our our feedback form or e-mail to: info@ecvfc.org
