Evans Center Covers
Structure Fire for Highland
MidTown – Town of Evans NY – January 10, 2004 --- As
has happened on more than one occasion, a mutual aid company has had to cover
for a neighboring fire department at a structure fire while they were out of
service.
Such was the case on Saturday-January 10 when the Highland
Hose Fire Company went out of service for their annual dinner.
Evans Center and North Evans firefighters responded to a
reported structure fire on Wisconsin Road in Highland's district around 7pm.
The homeowner reported that he was thawing pipes with a
torch in the rear of the two-family home when the wall caught fire. Frigid
temperatures had frozen pipes above the frost line.
Smoke filled the first floor apartment and traveled up a
pipe chase to the separate second floor apartment.
Evans Center Firefighters entered up a stairwell on the No.
2 side of the structure to search the second floor. Using their thermal imager,
they checked for fire extension and ventilated the space by opening the
available windows.
North Evans firefighters opened up the outside and inside
walls near the sliding glass doors at the rear of the house. Once the bulk of
the fire was knocked down, firefighters used a water can to mop up the remaining
burning materials.
North Evans was assisted at the scene by Lake View
firefighters, Town of Evans Police and Water Departments, Rural/Metro
Paramedics, North Evans Ladies Auxiliary, Niagara Mohawk Power Corporation and
the Angola Fire Control Dispatch Center.
