Firefighters Bring Sunshine & Smiles to Cradle Beach Campers
Town of Evans NY – MidTown – July 4, 2004 ---
It's all about the smiles.
Young campers at Cradle Beach Camp in the Town of Evans got a special treat on Thursday-July 2, 2004. Evans Center Firefighters visited as part of the camp's weekly Sunshine Day activities.
Evans Center Firefighters Dennis Allen, Al Chastain, Bob Corsi, Mike Relosky and Geordie Sinclair brought Engine 1 to the lakefront campground for disadvantaged children.
The firefighters demonstrated their gear and talked to the campers about fire prevention and staying safe during the summer.
Firefighters were back at the camp on Sunday-July 4, 2004 for the camp's annual "Salute to Hometown Heroes" Independence Day celebration.
The program started with a flag raising ceremony with the kids leading the group in the pledge to the flag and singing of the national anthem.
Assistant Fire Chief Tiger Schmittendorf introduced local emergency personnel in attendance: Evans Center Assistant Fire Chief Tim Szczepaniak, Past Chief Dennis Allen and Firefighter Matt Gombos; Highland Hose Fire Chief Bob Trask and Firefighter Don Doesller; Rural Metro Paramedic Laura DeJoy and EMT-I Sarah Hull; and Town of Evans Police Patrolman Dan Eppolito.
Bonnie Brusk, Director of Youth Services for Cradle Beach Camp, thanked the first responders for protecting and serving the camp each year.
The campers then gathered around the fire apparatus, ambulance and patrol car for a very hands-on tour and demonstration. The kids enjoyed blowing the sirens and air horns, talking on the PA system, trying on the turnout gear and being connected to EMS equipment. Evans Center charged their deck gun and sprayed water across the camp, allowing the campers to cool-off in the muggy heat of the day.
The time together was enjoyed by everyone. The emergency personnel thanked and congratulated the camp counselors for the tremendous work they perform on behalf of the children.
